چکیده

Host complexes formed through non-covalent interactions comprise a rapidly growing area of supramolecular chemistry. In particular, three-dimensional hosts which reversibly encapsulate guests hold great potential as both novel tools in chemistry and as biological models. Here, we describe the design, synthesis, and study of several selfassembling molecular capsules. In particular, we discuss how challenges encountered with earlier capsules were overcome using a modular strategy based upon unique glycoluril building blocks. This method generated capsules approaching nanoscale dimensions that were studied using a combination of NMR and ESI-mass spectrometry. Progress toward novel supramolecular capsules which utilize both hydrogen bonds and metal-ligand interactions is reported and new ferric iron sequestering agents are introduced. Structurally plastic peptide capsules for synthetic antimicrobial viruses.

A conceptual design for artificial antimicrobial viruses is described. The design emulates viral assembly and function to create self-assembling peptide capsules that promote efficient gene delivery and silencing in mammalian cells. Unlike viruses, however, the capsules are antimicrobial, which allows them to exhibit a dual biological function: gene transport and antimicrobial activity. Unlike ...

Hydrogen-Bonded Hexameric Capsules of Resorcin[4]arene, Pyrogallol[4]arene and Octahydroxypyridine[4]arene are Abundant Structures in Organic Solvents: A View from Diffusion NMR

Hydrogen-bond molecular capsules have attracted much interest in the last decade. In the present paper, we wish to describe new insights obtained from diffusion NMR when studying the self-assembly of resorcin[4]arenes (2), pyrogallol[4]arenes (3) and octahydroxypyridine[4]arenes (4) in solution. These diffusion NMR studies demonstrate that compounds 2 and 3 self-assemble spontaneously into hexa...

Polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules as vehicles with tunable permeability.

This review is devoted to a novel type of polymer micro- and nanocapsules. The shell of the capsule is fabricated by alternate adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) onto the surface of colloidal particles. Cores of different nature (organic or inorganic) with size varied from 0.1 to 10 mum can be used for templating such PE capsules. The shell thickness can be tuned in nanomet...

Cyclic peptide facial amphiphile preprogrammed to self-assemble into bioactive peptide capsules.

Self-assembled peptide nanostructures have shown great potential as promising biomaterials. Peptides have the advantage of being intrinsically biocompatible materials. Peptides, as self-assembling building blocks, have mostly been designed to have head/tail molecular configuration. Since there is a great deal of interest in the precise control of a self-assembly process, novel building blocks s...

Investigating Molecular Recognition by Mass Spectrometry: Characterization of Calixarene-Based Self-Assembling Capsule Hosts with Charged Guests

Capsules derived from the reversible assembly of calixarene tetraureas have been characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Ion labeling was achieved through the encapsulation of ammonium ions as guest molecules. The gas-phase ion structure of the parent calixarene was determined by isotope pattern analysis, inclusion of labeled guests, and collision experiments. Competition ex...
